Frequently asked questions about renting a room

Short, honest answers to the questions students and starters ask most.

Where is the best place to look for a room in the Netherlands?

Spread your search across several sources: room platforms, student housing providers such as SSH and Idealis, and local groups. Whoever responds fastest to new listings has the best chance. See our guide on finding a room faster.

How much does renting a room cost on average?

It varies a lot by city and type of accommodation; the big student cities and the Randstad are more expensive. We give honest price indications per city in our guide, and the Huurcommissie rent check lets you verify whether the asked rent is reasonable.

How do you spot a scam when renting a room?

The key rule: never pay a deposit or rent up front without having seen the room yourself and signed a valid contract. Watch for a price that is too low, a landlord who is 'abroad', and pressure to pay quickly. Our guide lists the red flags.

As a student, am I entitled to rent benefit?

For self-contained accommodation you can apply for rent benefit (huurtoeslag) if you meet the conditions, such as age, income and rent limit. For a shared student room it is more nuanced. Do a trial calculation at the Belastingdienst; our guide explains it per situation.

How do you register for student housing?

Register as early as possible with your city's student housing provider, such as SSH, DUWO or Idealis; at many providers your registration time determines your position. Combine that with alerts on the open market. Our guide explains it step by step.
